1955 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 1955

1955 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 1955

Ref: 968/E10

From the outstanding 1955 vintage produced this deep coloured port scored 19/20 by Jancis Robinson 'The only vintage Taylor's declared in the 1950s. According to the Fladgate Partnership, 'one of the most underrated vintages of the century'. Taylor's own two great vineyards in the Douro, Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta de Terra Feita. Both are categorised grade A - the highest possible rating. In years when Taylor's produces a classic vintage, wines from these two estates are blended together. As they are some 20 miles apart, and subject to very different micro climates, they combine to produce a powerful, long lived and complex vintage port. In 1955 there was a heatwave at the end of April and early May. Rain at the end of May was beneficial for the flowering. July and August were hot, and at the time of the vintage the bunches were in excellent condition. The general starting date for the vintage was on the 26 September, and a shower on the 22 September did a lot of good. Light rain fell on 2 and 3 October but did no harm, and helped cool the temperature. Mid rose red. This somehow not only looks but tastes rose red. Lovely and lifted and fresh. There's a real core of excitement to this. How lovely!' Drink now - 2038.

An outstanding Vintage Port year producing superbly balanced Vintage Ports which are fruity, smooth and concentrated. A note from Ronald Symington of the Symington Port Group, which owns the well known names as W&J Graham Vintage Port, Dow Vintage Port and Warre Vintage Port, stated "The musts on the whole were very pleasant and generally speaking the later lagares were better than the earlier ones. We think some very good wines should be made as the colour generally was good and they were also very nice on the nose and palate."

Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman was founded in 1692 in Vila Nova de Gaia by Job Bearsley, becoming Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman when Joseph Taylor, John Alexander Fladgate and Morgan Yeatman formed a partnership in 1838. Taylor Fladgate owns the brands of Fonseca, Fonseca-Guimaraens, Taylors, and Croft which it bought in 2001 and whose first vintage was the 2003 vintage. Taylor Fladgate invented the style of late-bottled vintage port in the 1960's and continues to use traditional methods (including foot treading in stone lagares) to make an outstanding range of vintage ports.
