1944 Massandra Collection 1944 Gurzuf Rose Muscat. A rare Muscat rose dessert wine from the oldest winery in the Ukraine. The Massandra apellation stretches along the South Coast of the Crimea. Sweet wine production goes back to the early 19th Century in the region, which flourished under the unquenchable demand of the Tsars. Here, the luxurious winemaking history remained intact under communism, unlike what later happened behind the Iron Curtain to the sweet wine estates of Hungary. From 1944, this is quite a collectible! Quoting Robert Parker: “Founded by Tsar Nicholas II in 1894, the Massandra Winery, on the outskirts of Yalta, on the Crimean Peninsula, supplied the royal family with fine wines while they were vacationing at their summer palace at Livadia.
