Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage ‘La Chapelle’ 2011. The Jaboulet house has a rich heritage dating back to 1834 – one of the longest histories of any winery in the world. High up on the steep slopes of Hermitage, arguably the most important hill in all of wine, the ancient chapel of St Christopher overlooks the northern Rhône. This wine is its namesake – and it’s the most important of all Jaboulet’s creations. It’s one of the finest examples of pure Syrah, produced from the best plots on the hill and regarded as sharing the same prowess as a Bordeaux First Growth. The 2011 vintage scored 96 points from Wine Advocate, and after over a decade of maturing and developing in bottle, it’s now drinking perfectly. Expect intense and complex notes of ripe blackberry, black plum, liquorice, smoked meat and spice with an incredibly long finish. This will pair beautifully with rich game dishes or develop further over the next decade..
